Rest of July... pretty quiet overall. Doing some non-music work and as much music work as I can afford! :)

Time flies!

Just realized its been a while. The iPod isn't so good with the blogspot software so its a little less convenient to do this from the road.

Anyway... The Seval tour was great. The music got better all the time and the band members are all so nice that they can put up with me even! :)

We are playing this summer at Hagen Festen and in the fall at the Umeå Jazz Fest. Nice reviews have been popping up as well. If you are or know a promoter who might be interested in presenting us, let me know.

After that, spent a week in Copenhagen courtesy of Ms Lotte Anker. We played a gig and did some recording. Am looking forward to hearing the results of that as well as a session with Sture Ericsson. Also a nice gig with PO Jorgens and Johs Lund. And a cool session with two young Danes (Jakob and Bjoern) who work under the name the BodaBoda duo.

Got some work done on the charts for the next Fast Citizens record as well.

Then to Amsterdam. Nice gigs with Jodi Gilbert, Wilbert DeJoode and Alan Purvis and Sean Bergin.

Now in Berlin until the tentet tour starts. For once trying to just be a tourist here although... One gig:

Election time

time out for politics:

So... last time we in Chicago chose Aldermen (City Council reps), my district ditched the devil we knew (Matlak) for one we didn't... Scott Waguespack. He turned out to be about as decent a guy as one could have in City Council (surprise!). No Daley rubberstamper, he was one of the few to sound the alarm over the LAZ deal on the meters way early. A few more people like him and... we might stil own our parking spaces. He also was proactive and accessible in the debate over the "promoters ordinance" that would have been a disaster for independent underground venues of the type I frequent. His regular emails keep me posted on the local school events and the farmers market and bike rides and... well... liked him enough to vote for him again. I do wish he would have responded to my queries about IRV but... no one is perfect! AM going to try again after the election.

On the other hand, he must be driving some deep pocket types crazy as this time he has several shady dudes all trying to grab enough votes to put the race into run-off.

All of them look vaguely like him (Wicker Park Domestic Shorthairs is the breed I think) :) and don't really have much of interest to offer (except candidate Lynch who peddles fear like he's auditioning to be a Fox contributor)(see photo attached).

Anyway, have been getting robo calls from these guys and even a "live" human for Candidate Pavlik. In that instance, in an effort to slow her down and reduce the number of calls she could make I engaged her in a chat.

She quickly revealed she knew nothing about him aside from what was written on her script. She made a point of his being born in the 32nd (our ward). I asked her if she had been, she said no. She also told me she had never lived in the 32nd. I thought that was interesting as it seemed odd that someone would volunteer outside their own ward. She then told me (in a tone that sounded like, "what kind of fool do you think I am?") that she was getting paid "of course"!

Who the fuck is paying her? I told her I hoped it was a "living wage" but thought to myself, 2 bucks an hour would be to much for her "skills."

Anyway... I let her go then but first told her that a person being paid to read a script (badly I might add) who doesn't even live in my ward is not very convincing.

But the prize for offensive nonsense has to go to Mr. Lynch.

The card I scanned and attached here speaks volumes. Am not sure where he gets his data from. While yes, crime (and how we can improve the situation) is an issue, I know that the pictures he included are not of people in my district (or possible from this planet!). How he can create a rogues gallery of imaginary boogey men to scare the folks is beyond me. And his solution? More cops! What a jerk.

So... for the first time in my life, I have an official campaign poster in my front window. Go Waguespack!

2011 gets started

A quiet couple of weeks here. Plowing through old tapes (trying to consolidate and reduce the boxes of nonsense) (thanks Seonaid Valiant!) and playing the tenor guitar a lot around the house (thanks Joe Mills!), writing for some groups I like to write for and... doing the "office."
AM however, playing a gig with John Dikeman at Elastic on Thursday and Jeff Kimmel at Myopic next Monday (the 10th) and... who knows!
Mid month I am in Oslo for a few days (solo and a first meeting type thing @ the All Ears Fest) and then hit the road for a week with Peter Brötzmann playing duos.

...have decided to revive this blog. Will keep it vague but try to fill in some blanks.
Just got home from 3+ weeks of back to back tours with Survival Unit III and Broetzmann Chicago 10tet.
Lots of good times and the usual amount of less than good times. Between the two bands, more than 20 gigs as far south as Barcelona and north as Oslo. Also got to play a duo gig with Johannes Bauer.

Its good to be home but the border guards are enough to make one wish that moving out of this country and never returning wasn't incredibly difficult.
The border agent at O'Hare asked me if they really let me "play the cello in all those different countries" or was I "just visiting them?".
I guess it seems amazing to those guys as they routinely turn away musicians at their border and assume their brothers in other countries relish the same pleasures. (Incidentally, the US policy on musicians visiting the US is terrible. The government seems bent on isolating the US from the rest of the world culturally. Its not just musicians who have a difficult time. They turn away novelists, dancers, scholars, etc all the time. Symphony orchestras have canceled tours here because of the prohibitive work permit prices and bureaucratic hurdles. Even tourists from Europe have to file forms and pay a visa fee just to visit here.)(but... I digress!).
Anyway, this Friday the Valentine Trio is playing a benefit for Gregory Koger. He found himself in jail (and may return there) because of other policies I don't think are good for America. Info here:

Well... blogging isn't really in my blood or so it seems but... had to reject about 30 spam "comments just now and thought I would drop a friendly note to the blogosphere.
Things are good if not hectic. Just got back from 2 weeks on the Pacific Northwest coast. Played with a bunch of fine folks at "Time Flies" in Vancouver (a different vibe than usual there while the corporate elite prepared to stifle dissent among the masses but... that's a different story), and the "SIMF" in Seattle. In between a very nice gig in Portland.
Now am preparing for a short (4 gig) tour playing duos with Peter Broetzmann (Ann Arbor, Lexington, Milwaukee and Chicago) and then head to Switzerland to end off the month with Isa Wiss and Marc Unternahrer and Jason Stein (Lost Lucy is the name of the band). Then a duo hit with Charlotte Hug and a week in Scandinavia (Staale Liavik and Stina Motland) and run home to play some here with Sture E and then... well... anyway.
I owe a lot of people a lot of thank yous but mondo ones to Brad W, Winston S and Thorsten M for putting the last two weeks of snow free music fun together!
On the political front, had to laugh when I heard Daley is now anti war and wants to know why we aren't out in the streets. If he will guarantee that his thugs won't round us up and drive us to the farthest police station and release us at 2:00 in the morning with no public transportation to get home, well... I'm there! I know its wimpy to put such things ahead of opposing the war but... his honorable self could definitely do more than ask rhetorical questions. Maybe he could lead a march!
US out of A-stan, P-stan, Yemen, Iraq, Iran... While were at it, dismantle the NED and School of the Americass (sic), cut off support to the dictator of Honduras and the several other dozen military dictatorships we support!

PS - I heard recently that each computer server has roughly the same carbon footprint as an suv and that the planets server population has a combined carbon footprint equal to that other "awesome" industry, the airlines and yet, I would not like to go back to the middle ages where nobody went anywhere or knew what was going on on the next town let alone continent. Yikes!

Many apologies to the few who still look here for updates. I will try to keep up on it better. I am working on a website that should be accessible to all and will post here when it is up and running with a calendar etc!
In the meanwhile... greetings from Norway! The Brotzmann 10tet convened to play a gig at the Molde Festival. This is about as far away from Chicago as I have ever gone for just one hit. Am not entirely comfortable with the environmental costs of such forays but... "when on earth, do as the earthlings" is what I am told.
To make the trip more memorable, the check-in walla at O'Hare gave me a new pseudonym. My new rock and roll/porn name is Spencer B. Long! I caught it about 5 minutes after walking away from the counter and then had to go back to try to sort out the luggage thing. The 'cello was still there but the suitcase was gone. I ended up retrieving and rechecking it at the first transfer (very much confusing the staff there). To make matters worse, the flight out of O'Hare had sat on the runway for almost 4 hours before taking off and so.. we missed our connections and the entire trip took about 27 hours and... today we start the reverse. We fly to Oslo this evening and spend the night at the airport and then fly in the morning to Stockholm and then Chicago. Hopefully there will be no missed connections. The saying is "the music is free, we get paid for the traveling." In this case, I figured out that I barely made what the Chicagoistas call a "living wage" for my time in transit. Good thing I like playing in the band! (Really!) (you know it!)
Norway though, is beautiful. On the other hand, its about as expensive a place as I have ever been. A small bottle of water at the corner news stand is $3. Today can take a boat ride to an island for a "free" lunch (for "artists") but am not sure how much the boat ride will cost! Had a fantastic "free" dinner last night (won't tell you what, but it was unusual...) but made the mistake of having a couple of glasses of wine not realizing I would have to pay for them and... while the wine was much better than the usual crap I drink, they worked out to about $20 per glass! Holy smokes!
Anyway... here are some of the gigs I have coming up. They are all in Chicago so... I shouldn't have any crazy travel days (a couple of them, I can even ride my bike to) and for the cost of one glass of wine here, I can get plastered! (but I don't condone drunk bike riding!)

Ahhh... gods own holiday. Am in such a good mood I don't even mind all these minor cults gloming on to the big tiny day. Anyway... when you want to contemplate god in its immensity, why not pick the shortest day?
Anyway... Since getting back have been spending too much time messing around with a bread board and a few dollars worth of resistors and ic chips and... whatever else has little legs capable of being stuck in the breadboard. Playing the cello takes the rest of the time. Otherwise, the V5 did a few days work recording the pieces we toured with in November (sort of backwards, but... when did any of us demonstrate much shrewdness?). Also, set up a Myspace page. After the recording session, Vandermark, Daisy, Nate McBride and I have been rehearsing every day for a tour in January as the Frame 4tet. Its debut is listed below. Rehearsals have been good but I have no idea what it will actually be like to play the charts in public. If you can't make the Hideout show... the tour starts in Antwerp and drifts across Europe as far east as Crakow and Zagreb. Maybe you can make one of them.

Its hot! No surprise there. Am staying in and working on the 25 or so things I wanted to do this summer. Among them, building a sound processor from a kit made by Todd Bailey. Will let you know how it comes out.

Hoo-haa! Its hot! Not so bad really but slightly less comfortable than the Pacific Northwest... oh well... maybe I will have to move to Astoria some day.
Meanwhile, here in Chicago, Swiss experimental violinist (and I don't use the "experimental" word often) Charlotte Hug and I are going to do a couple of exploratory hits. Sort of old meets new or something (myself being more of a re-research/neo-non-teleogist for the most part).

Scotland was a blast. Only advice... don't call it England!
Anyway, survived the Valentine Trio gig last night in spite of arriving in Chicago in the afternoon. Fortunately, the flight was mellow.
So...
Monday the 5th at Myopic with Josh Abrams and Co.
Tuesday the 6th at Elastic with Eric Leonardson.
Thursday the 8th at Elastic with Phil Wachsman (UK) and then run over to Enemy to play with Michaels Colligan and Zerang.
Friday the 9th is a first meeting type thing with Veryan Weston (UK) and Klaas Hekman (NL) at the Rennaisance Society.
Sunday the 11th the same trio will play at the Brain but performing some of the music we will be planning to present at the Vision Fest in New York (on Tuesday the 12th).
On the 10th Veryan will play duos with Jim Baker and Klaas will play with Lou Mallozi at Elastic. I will be there relaxing!

Anyway... really glad the Merry Merry Month of May is coming as a little merryness is definitely good for the spirit. But...

Ahhh, it finally feels like spring here (who knows if it will last, but its nice for now).
Have been busy getting my new (first and only!) CDR label. It will be called Flying Aspidistra and will feature obscure and likely poor selling (worse than usual!) recordings from my archive. The covers will be hand printed and all releases will remain in print indefinitely. The first release will be a recording of a 2003 Lightbox Orchestra performance by Sweden's Front Room Ensemble recorded at Fylkingen in Stockholm. Drop me a note if you want a copy.
Aside from that (and dealing with my cat Henry's leg troubles) and working on the usual array of music projects...
Have to finish and install a sound piece at Gescheidle Gallery in a group show curated by Annie Morse. I will also show the red metal box of junk I use sometimes on the cello (with an inventory list). The opening is Friday April 21. Gescheidle is at 118 N. Peoria. The tel is 312-226-3500.
There are also a couple of gigs later this month... but I will list them when its a little closer.

So... back in one piece. The folks at American Airlines managed to arrive early even though they left late and... my luggage was even on the same flight as me! Amazing! This was fortunate as I was cutting it close for the gig last night. Fortunately, everything worked out. Vancouver, Seattle and Portland were a blast. Thanks to all the folks who helped make it happen especially Torsten and Ken, Tom, Carl, Tara and you!
So... am on holiday with the exception of a concert Sunday playing a Guillermo Gregrio piece at the Cultural Center with the Maverick ensemble. After that...
Friday March 3 the Valentine Trio play at Maxim's for the "Stop Smiling" (magazine) party. We'll have a couple of guests sit in (Greg Ward and Matt Schneider).

So... what a week the McPhee trio tour was! I don't know how many thousands of miles of train tracks we have ridden on but enough to last a while for most people for sure. An average of three connections a day and we only missed one (an Italian train, no surprise?). In spite of it all the tripping it was worthwhile if for no other reason than the music. Thanks to Joe and Michael for putting up with me!

Memorable non music events have to include drinking in Florence while waiting for our 2:00 am train... celebrating Joe's birthday with the "Bielefeld girls" (a shout out to Anna, Sabine and Sigge!)... listening to the spinning display cases at the Venice Airport (worth checking out but you have to be there when the airport is officially closed and nobody is making any sounds).

Anyway, after the hell ride from Zagreb-Venice-Amsterdam-Oslo-Stavengar I hooked up with the excellent Vandermark 5 and since then its been almost TOO civilized! It did take a day to recover from the travelling of the previous week but 3 gigs in Norway (with pleasant flights from one to the next) and then a Flight to Madrid where we are hanging for a few days until the next gig and now feel as good as new. Too bad its wet and cold here but... the anchovies make up for it! Check the previous post for the schedule from here on out.

So... after the V5 tour, its some solo/ad-hoc small group tour and then back home for a few midwest gigs with Jorrit Dykstra and the Flatland Collective (dates coming!) and then the V5 at the Bottle on December 13 and then the Valentine trio on the 16th at Danny's and then...?

Greetings from Oslo. Have survived the Terries tour (actually very civilized). Of course it was great to hang out with the band (nobody even got into a fight!). Ken's new pieces are excellently mysterious in construction but make sense enough that it was a pleasure playing them again and again and the audiences seemed to be enjoy them too! The forms are a bit like Calder mobiles or something in that they balance but the objects are all different and one isn't quite sure why it doesn't just fall flat.
Onward... Tonight is a quartet with Froede Gjerstad, Amit Senn and Paul Nilsson-Love at Bla here in Oslo (the land of the $11 shot of bourbon!!) and we do it again tomorrow in Stavengar.
After that... am doing some hanging in berlin until the McPhee/Zerang/FLH trio tour...

Okay... Am pretty much all better now. Thanks again to Chris for taking me on what, in spite of my infirmaries, turned out to be a very enjoyable trip (in no small part due to the excellent Mr. Hembrey and Mr. Dodds). Thanks also to Lucero and Limbeck for being such swell dudes even when I was not able to keep up with the party.
So, am back. Here again...

After days of saying, "oh yeah, the worst is over, I am finally getting better" I realized it was not so and... went to the emergency room after the gig the other night and... it turns out, I had developed pneumonia! Oh well, now I know. Fortunately it was still fairly early and a short course of antibiotics and some high-test cough syrup is all I needed (they pumped 3 litres of fluids into me too but I think that might have been more for the theater of it but... anyway...). They (the docs, nurses, techs and transporters) were super nice. The nurse who initially saw me (Michael?) was as conscientious and thoughtful as any I have ever met and the main Doc I saw (Doctor Freeman!) was awesome and had a fiddle tattoo on his shoulder and plays bluegrass music, like... how cool is that?!
Anway, I don't think anyone goes to emergency rooms just because... but if you need ER services in Boston, you should go to the Boston Medical Center. I really have to thank all the folks there for the treatment and of course, the guys in the band for waiting for me (they slept in the van outside the ER since they weren't sure how long I would have to stay and didn't want to abandon me)(Love!).

Well... am trying to get over a pretty bad cold. Fortunately we had a day off in New York and although I would have preffered getting around and seeing people and places I was lucky that my friend Michael Attias could let me use his apartment as a recuperation zone. Today we (CM and TNMB) head to Boston, am hoping I will feel better than I have the last few days. We have about a week more together and I want to make the most of it!
After I get home have a few gigs that I am looking forward to.

So... Greetings from the road. The New Misereable Bastards tour is going well so far. Chris is singing great and recent add Jay Dodds is kicking the rock on the rig. Of course my good bud Ryan Hembrey is keeping the bottom end in line. Lucero, the headliners of the bill play that music that bridges the agrarian and industrial. I keep imaging they are actually operating plows instead of guitars. Its nice in a good old boy sort of way (if you like that sort of thing)(sometimes (often) I do). Also on the tour is the Limbeck Travelling Band or something like that. A tremendously nice bunch of very young hippies. I think the band has legs though, so look out!
So far the folks we have met have been Terrific (thanks Bart!).
Onr final note... right after DC we go straight to New York to play some "secret" gigs and one at "Lincoln Center" or so they say. I can get you details if you want.
First we have to work our way up the east coast and hope we don't meet "Ophelia." Even just a generic Hurricane can really ruin your day.

Actually, Hollywood is coming here. The Ms. and I are moving into the basement so our house can be a location for some film with Will Farrel and a few other big boxoffice dudes (and dudettes?). Anyway, I guess our house matched the vibe needed for the pad of Will's girlfriend who is a "funky" chick living in Chicago and working in a coffee shop or something. Anyway... we don't mind. We wanted to do a lot of work on the place and this will help fund it and they will pay for the moving crew to empty the place so... excelllent!
Don't bother asking me if I can get you in to meet Will or something as I will be away when he is here and doubt they would like you to drop in either.

Greetings from Collinsville! Am holed up here getting ready for a few shows with Chris Mills. We are in Memphis tomorrow, then St. Louis Friday and Bloomington, Indiana Saturday. The Guardian

OK, I'm paranoid and depressed. My new government of troglodytes, murderers and spivs barely elongates the customary scream I give upon waking. What troubles me more is our rulers' inevitable recommencement of the war on terror bollocks.

To begin at what we're told is the beginning, we have 9/11 - the one in the US, not the earlier one in Chile when covert US government intervention killed thousands of innocents and handed the country to a commerce-friendly, torture-loving, far-right junta. Now if 9/11/2001 is so important, why is it so hard to find out what happened?

The FBI, as we know, blocked all manner of investigations into the plot in the run up to its execution, whether these involved highly specific warnings from its own agents or from government sources in Afghanistan, Argentina, Britain, the Cayman Islands, Egypt, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Morocco and Russia.

Meanwhile, I worry why the nearest military aircraft weren't scrambled to intercept any of the hijacked flights when this is standard procedure and why, when more distant jets were finally aloft, they flew at less than half speed, thus failing to prevent the impacts at the twin towers and then, it would seem, managing to shoot down Flight 93 when its passengers may already have overcome its hijackers.

It would, of course, be easier to know what happened to Flight 93 if there weren't - according to educated estimates - three minutes of the cockpit recording missing. It would, equally, be handy to have access to the black boxes from the other crashes. Firefighters at Ground Zero have repeatedly stated that three of the four possible black boxes there were found and taken away by government agents.

And these worries are maybe less important than the ones about clear links between the Pakistani ISI, the CIA and the men named as the 9/11 hijackers. Or the mysterious inability of anyone to capture Osama bin Laden, who fled from Tora Bora, possibly being evacuated by helicopter, and then escaped to Pakistan unhindered.

So while Chinese paperclips are now made out of vital 9/11 evidence and almost every implicated party goes free, we and our controlling US interests continue fearlessly to terrorise countries unconnected with the attacks, to place permanent military bases near oil reserves and pipeline routes, to harass and murder Muslims anywhere we can, and to foment terrorist resistance at every opportunity. The UK unmasks non-existent ricin plots and threatens us with ID cards, but we can't supply our troops in Iraq with working radios or a legal causus belli.

But you'd never want to think that on 9/11/2001 covert US government intervention killed thousands of innocents and handed the country, if not the world, to a commerce-friendly, torture-loving, far-right junta. That would make you a paranoid, depressed conspiracy theorist. And, take it from me, that just wouldn't be comfortable.

Okay, so... Thursday night... solo at 3030. John Butcher too! After solo sets, I think the plan is to play duos. Last time, in London, was a blast. It was also the night I met Martin Davidson (from Emanem) who then released my solo disc Dialogs so... having John here for the "record release party" is extra nice (for me at least!).
Saturday night DJ Chaka and the numinous radio/Sugar Fly party continues... If you like trip hop with live strings and rhythm section and some vibes and keys and... well... maybe I will show some slides and I think there might be a video or two and... well, who knows! The vibe is usually pretty mellow.

Next Wednesday... the 27th at the Zhou B. Center I am involved in this thing Eric Graf put is putting together. He is trying to get 100 improvisers to play together. I think the layout will resemble a pentagram. Myself and 4 other people will conduct the ensemble (whatever that means!). I will do a sort of lightbox. Texas!

Sheeez, Texas! Its not so big after all! Actually, we drove from Dallas to Austin in less than four hours (and even stopped at a czech rest stop and had an awesome sausage). 'Shevitz bought a sink stopper with an Armadillo in the center while I ate a fantastic jalapeno sausage.
Here in Texas people are much nicer than the hype in Illinois suggests (why ARE we at war with Texas, anyway?). My friends who drive cars with Kerry stickers or no W stickers assured me they are not taking their lives in their own hands and nobody could think of any vandalism realting to their stickerage. Wow!
In Dallas... we went to this interesting restaurant where everyone looked like they were from the cast of "Dallas" only friendlier. There were even life-sized Bears in friendly poses (which they held the entire time we were there!). There were these nice people who park your car for you. If your car is real pretty they park it by the front door so everyone else can enjoy looking at it. When you are done, they even bring your car back! Jason and I were confused about which SUV we were supposed to get in and accidentaly got in the wrong one but nobody wanted to tell us to get out (so nice), so we sat in it for at least 5 minutes (chatting about the Toyota Prius and how cool they were even if the batteries need replacing so often and are toxic as hell, but...).
Anyway... eventually we realizeed this wasn't the car we were supposed to be in (it was a Volvo SUV, not a Chevy SUV)(but they were both gold) and got out and still nobody complained.
Austin was more like home (but better BBQ!).
The gigs down here were with Guillermo's trio. I think we all are extemely thankful to Dorothy, Bill, Carl, Holland, Josh, Pedro, Russ and The Jennifer's for their warm hospitality. Thanks also to all the nice folks I met and didn't shoot me!.

Home... catching up... We survived and even managed to make the customs agent laugh coming back. How, I won't tell you (proprietary secret). Anyway... Canada was a blast. We even got to see Avril Levine's (spelling?) rehersal space. They blindfolded us when we drove there so don't even ask where its located. Anyway... she wasn't around but we did get treated to a re-recording of Sk8er (spelling?) Boy done by a super singer who while a few years older than the neck tied one, did a very convincing job of sounding like her! Later we heard the voice impersonater's own songs and... in a better world, Her music would be getting the same treatment!

Thanks again to all those mentioned before plus Ron, Rebecca, Joe, Ken and Ingrid (and Aaron). We had a great (gr8?) time and are going to try to get out more soon (this fall?)... let me know if you want to present us in your town. {;o)

Greetings from the nicer country! Today is rainy and cold but its still great to be breathing the fresh air of freedom (or at least the fresher air of a bit more freedom). The trio has been out for 4 days now and so far its been a great trip. The leg from Lexington to Columbus taking secondary highways was one of the nicest drives I have had in a long time. We have been very fortunate in how well the organizers of the gigs have treated us. Thanks Ross, Larry, Mike, Tom, Robert, Ken, Ron... everybody!

Last night was the "real" gig here in Toronto. Today we play an afternoon gig at a record store and tomorrow we are just tourists. Monday we are in Ann Arbor (Cantrbury House?) so... tell your friends!

April is my chance to write and practice up for what might be an interesting time in May (Brotz 10 North America tour) but there are a few gigs here and there.

quiet week

Am trying to catch up on other shit. Meanwhile...
Thursday night at 3030 with Uncle Woody Sullender and Shawn Decker. I think it might be a free hoedown (or at least Decker plays fiddle and Woody plays banjo and I might just bring a wash tub bass).
Saturday night am hanging with Swiss saxist Thomas Mejer at Hotti Biscotti. The Kedzie Terrorists (Baker/Lonberg-Holm/Mejer/Zerang)will play at about 12:00 but earlier am doing a trio with Paul Giallorenzo and Thomas. Did I mention that Mejer plays contra bass sax or something? I don't know what its actually called but its really low (at least an octave lower than the normal lowest (aka baritone) sax).

Otherwise.... look out for or tell your friends that the Valentine trio is coming to somebody's town soon... See the previous post for details. Email me if you want specifics.

well... now I know there are a few readers out there. Sorry about the uncharacteristic blather last week. I promise to stay a little more on point from now on but... for those interested:
The Festival ended last night (with a bang!). The whole thing was pretty great for a small organization (hey Susan and Gustavo!) and their friends/temp associates. having almost all the events at the Dorsch Gallery made it sweeter too as Brokk (the Gallerist?) was as nice a host as you could imagine and even seemed to like the music! Even I who often find these things way too square no matter how well intentioned, had a good time (maybe I am just getting older?). Some real sweet stuff this year and people seemed to be digging it!
Also got to go to the Margulies collection and have to say that its the most amazing private collection I have ever seen and the dude (an evil real estate tycoon, no doubt) lets you in for free (show off!). Anyway... its totally worth it. Sorry I didn't get to the Rubell (Studio 54 anyone?) Collection (especially when I found out they had some choice Elizabeth Peytons!) but... that's life.
Got to ride around in a '67 Mercedes sedan and a brand new Prius and even drove myself on the freeway in a Cabriolet with the roof down (several times).
Anyway... I looove Miami! The weather in March... aaaah! The coffee... aaah! The people (hello Lily and Claudia and Ashley and...everyone!).
So... back to the routine

So, Yeah? Why not? It is a blog after all. I can always delete this later anyway... so...sitting here in Miami at the fabulous Dorsch Gallery while not much is happening. Its already 3:00 here and I guess eventuallly we will rehearse for tonights gig but none of us really know each other all that well and I think we are all shuddering to think what we will do to each others “pieces” so nobody is in too much of a hurry to set up. besides... we aren't even sure who is playing in who's pieces anyway...
Tom Hamilton is tweaking mikes for the piano for Michael Schumacher (not the race car driver)’s piece but he (Schumacher) is playing chess on a rediculously large set with a guy named Brandon who is helping organize the festival transportation but also happens to look like and identify with Napoleon Dynamite (hello Damen!).
Schumacher and I met once years ago but I had forgotten. He seems to know a lot about a lot so I am sorry I didn’t get to know him better then.
Anyway... a Hamilton piece that tracked gold prices for a period and converted them into pitch is playing now.
Toshi Makahara and Jim Meneses are setting up at the same time. Maybe they will play with (not just after) us.
Anyway... enough name dropping. Greetings from the tropics (actually Gustavo Matamoros calls this the “Sub-Tropics Festival.”)

Also... Monday the 14th I will have a piece in a show called "My Secret Valentine 5" at 1368 West Grand Ave. from 6-9pm. Its an artist produced (Hi Francine!) one night event where all the work relates in someway to Valentines day. I think more than 40 artists are signed up. The participants randomly receive someone elses work at the end of the night. I was reluctant to do this as when I was a kid I hated the Secret Santa thing at school. The kid who got my present invariably hated it (and I usually could do without whatever I got too!) Hopefully this will be better (or at least less horrible) but since I will be at the Hideout when the gallary closes, I will be spared, in any event, the long faces. I think there will be free wine though!

So... as I said... my trio with JASON ROEBKE and FRANK ROSALY is playing at the Charleston tonight (the 15th) and the Empty Bottle tomorrow (16th). The Bottle hit is with Ton-Ton Macoute who promise me they will only use their machetes for musical purposes.
On the 22nd DJ Chaka and friends (aka Sugar Fly With Me) is jammin at the 3030. Its a mellow sort of trip-hop vibe so don't come for the skronk (that night).
The 31st is a Myopic night with my friend Darin Gray (who you may know from On Fillmore, Grand Ulena,You Fantastic!, Brise-Glace etc...). I think it will be trios with Jason Roebke.
Aside from that stuff am keeping a low profile and trying to catch up on the writing projects and mixing and working at the MCA (hi Dennis!) a lot this month so don't look for me in the usual party spots either!

On the 10th at the Bottle the Lightbox Orchestra (see personel below) is convening for a record release party celebrating the new disc on Terry Plumbing. Some other TP artists are also performing. Its free also!
On Thursday the 13th am playing duets with PETER BROTZMANN at Heaven Gallery on Milwaukee Avenue. I think ZERANG and BAKER will also play duo's that night (relive the Earth Sessions!) so, it might be a night to go out of your way for.
Looking into the future... my trio with JASON ROEBKE and FRANK ROSALY is playing at the Charleston on Saturday the 15th and the Empty Bottle on the 16th.

I probably won't add many events in the next couple of weeks so...

Yeah... the last gig i posted was several days ago now. Oh well...
I am in Arizona right now chilling wth my buddy Michael Krassner working on a secret project for the government (no kidding!).
Anyway... after this, its off to visit the folks for Turkey and then a few days in NYC working on some stuff for the future (my string quartet might finally get played a decade after it was written).
I will be doing a solo set at Barbes in Brooklyn on the 1st of December and then play some improvised small group things with a cast of New Yorkers invited by Michael Attias. I will post their names when I remember.
On the 3rd there is an opening of "art" by "musicians" at Corbett vs. Dempsey in Chicago. Some of the artists include Han Bennink, Peter Brotzmann, Sun Ra, Sebi Tramontana, Michael Hurley, Anthony Braxton, Michael Snow, Iue Mori, Chrstina Kubisch Pee Wee Russell and on and on... sheez! A lot to look at. Anyway...
Back to work... shhh!

Anyway... have been derelect about keeping this thing up to date. Jeb Bishop wrote this:
The Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet is performing with guest performer Mike Pearson as part of the Chicago Humanities Festival. The work to be performed, called "Be Music, Night," features poems by Kenneth Patchen, read by Mike, accompanied or otherwise by the band.
The performance is at 8 PM on Sunday, Nov. 7th, at the Thorne Auditorium at 375 E. Chicago Avenue -- part of Northwestern University's law school campus downtown.

A trio with Dave Rempis and Kent Kessler plays the next day at the WNUR festival (jazz?) and the next night (Sunday) Jim Baker, Kessler, Zerang and I play the Hungry Brain... the next night (Monday?) am playing Myopics legendary free improvised music workshop with Thomas Mejer and Paul Giallorenzo and Eric Leonardson.
Later that night (Monday the 11th) Will be doing something at the Hideout. Some of the usual guys are out of town so... Mike Reed will be drumming and... Berman, Jackson and Hatwich and I will play a tune or two and...?

Ken Vandermark's Territory Band is rehearsing for shows on Saturday in Milwaukee and Sunday here in Chicago. This time the band is the same as last except Per-Oke Holmlander couldn't make it and Lasse Marhug replaces Kevin Drumm.

Axel Doerner of the T-Band is staying after to do a few small gigs. We will play a quartet with Jason Roebke and Michael Zerang at Heaven on the 1st of October and he will play at Myopic Books on the 4th (with?). In between we will play duos in Bloomington Indiana (the 2nd) at The Loving Heart Counseling Center, 111 E. Kirkwood and Lexington Kentucky (the 3rd) (address?). Maybe someone will go to both of them (heh!)

On the 10th am doing a mini lightbox at Buddy in collaboration wiith Stephen Lapsithophon as part of the Whitewalls exhibition. It will be pretty multimedia-esque. Rotten Milk, Eleanor Balson, Ernst Karel, Junko Hartmann and I all manipulating texts read by a computer and bits of my cello playing. Its going out into the ether so... look for it.

Second Citizen returns to the Hideout on the 13th. Keefe Jackson... Aram Shelton... Josh Berman... Anton Hatwhich....Frank Rosaly... me...

BTW - the Lightbox vynil only release with the Brotzmann 10tet on one side and Sebi Tremontana's come Sunday ensemble on the other is oozing out of the box this month. Like Molasses in winter, its been real slow in arriving but... with only 500 copies made, it should disappear before the ink on the hand screened covers is really dry.
